The Longest Day or Ho-hum, Another Scenic Train Ride.

This day started in Zermatt and ended in Lauterburnnen.  They are roughly 70 miles apart by road - less as the crow flies.  So, how long should that take?

All day.

Here's how we did it.

Drop bags at front desk - a bag schlepping service is taking them today, thankfully.

Walk to train station.

Don runs back to get seat reservation slips from luggage. (after totally forgetting them on the Bernina Express - people were not impressed!)

Train from Zermatt to Visp.

Train to Montreux.

This is one of the few routes in Switzerland with much speed.  We touched 100 mph a few times en route.  However, we were delayed a bit by a malfunctioning door on our coach.

Arrive Montreux a bit late.  Discuss pros and cons of taking trolley bus versus ferry. Decide on trolley bus.

Hustle down the stairs, across the street and catch a B201 trolley bus to Chillon Castle. https://www.chillon.ch/en/

Zoom through a self-guided walking tour of the castle in an hour.

Back to the trolley bus to the train station. Grab a snack.

Find the MOB GlodenPass train. https://www.goldenpassline.ch/en/goldenpass-classic/# Its supposed to be one of the three great scenic trains in Switzerland.  Get on board. Try to find some food.  No snack bar on this train!  Good thing we had a snack!

These coaches are recreations of the historic ones on the route.

The train climbs out of Montreax and through a scenic valley.  It was scenic.  But we were so jaded after the Glacier Express, and a bit worn out by the day, so far, that we sat and talked as much as gazed out the window.

The MOB train ended in Zweisimmen.  Change trains.

On to Spiez!

Train to Spiez.  Change trains.

On to Interlaken!

Train to Interlaken.  Change trains. Train to Lauterbrunnen.

Lauterburnnen!  Finally!  Thanks BOB!

Walk out of the station and up hill across the street is our hotel - with our luggage waiting for us!

The view from the hotel.

Lauterbrunnen is in an amazing valley ringed with waterfalls and is a gateway to Junfraujoch, as we'll see tomorrow.
