Last full day at Glacier. We have our one day car pass to Twin Medicine Lakes. It's pretty near East Glacier. What's there? Who knows? Let's go!
A very pretty lake on a very pretty day |
They have a boat ride! A restored, historic boat. Let's ride! Sold out. But a wait list? Okay!
The boat |
While we're waiting, a short hike to a different view of the lake. We never get there. This is why.
A amazing meadow of wild flowers! |
...and some fragrant beargrass |
Finally. On the boat. On the other side of the lake, there's a two mile hike to a twin water fall. Here we go.
On the boat, we hear about exploding trees. Here's the deal. It's winter. Zero or below. All of a sudden, warm Sirocco winds blow. Temperature rises to the 50s and 60s and stays there a few days. Springtime! say the trees. Sap starts flowing. Sirocco winds quit. Back to below zero. Sap freezes. Trees explode! Actually, they split apart. Some times the trees heal by filling with sap in the spring.
Stripes are sap filling splits in tree from freezing sap. |
Sometimes they don't.
Exploded tree. |
The hike to the falls was pretty nice.
This way to the waterfall! |
Pretty big wild carrot! |
Aptly named Twin Falls |
Lot's of flowers along the way
Clearly, not flowers |
Spooky tree |
Mule deer |
Who's on whose trail? |
On the way back, it clouds up. While we're waiting for the boat, it pours, but then stops and the sun comes back out. Heading back to East Glacier, we stop for one last short hike. Another waterfall.
Running Eagle Falls |
This waterfall is weird. Looks like it's coming out of the rock - like a bad Disney ride design. |
Then, back at the Lodge, a nine hole pitch putt golf match!
Sue seems to have wandered off without her crutches. |
Tomorrow will be different. Very different.
